Species of leopards can be found from the Black Sea in Europe east to Burma and the Malay Peninsula, including all of India and Sri Lanka and as far north as Siberia. In Egypt, Osiris and his priests were sometimes pictured wearing leopard skins. In Africa, it was a sacred animal to the Ibo and at times was considered to in inhabited by the souls of the dead. To the Chinese it represented bravery and intense ferocity. The Arabs called it Nimi, which means courage, boldness and grace, while in Greece, the leopard was the traditional mount of the god Dionysus, who’s priests often wore leopard skins. People born under Leo are thus solar in nature. People born under Leo are said to be natural leaders, intelligent, magnanimous. A lion can be one extreme or the other, either a symbol of the devil whom Christ overcomes, or a model for a hero. The Lion can also represent the power of feminine energy. The female hunts and kills prey, feeds the group and takes care of the young. She is the nurturing force in all senses. The male roars to frighten prey and force them toward the lioness, who waits patiently for the right moment to attack. Although the male is the group’s protector, he doesn’t look for confrontation nor attacks needlessly. He only acts when challenged and will fight to death in order to protect, but in reality he prefers the easy, peaceful life. Lion’s Medicine teaches us the magic of group interaction, of group energy. It also teaches us the secrets of silence and patience. Patience is to pay attention to detail. Lion suggests that we
examine ourselves closely in order to understand our strengths and weaknesses, and to wait for the proper moment to act and take full advantage of a given situation. Like the snake, the lizard sheds its skin, and thus has come to represent
regeneration. Also symbolizes death followed by resurrection. It also symbolizes
safety and welfare because it can lose its tail and regenerate it. Oh what
wonderful dreams we weave of times forgotten and times remembered. Lizard
remembers the Dreamtime, has not forgotten the times he ruled the Earth. One
thing Lizard has not forgotten but alas man has, is, how to let go. Lizard when
under threat will let go of his tail as a defence mechanism thereby ensuring his
survival, but man will not let go of past issues and this will always be his
undoing, by bringing about dis-ease. If man would only remember to trust his
inner Dream and learn to let go, his enlightenment would be ensured. If Lizard
has dashed past you, you are being reminded by “Spirit’ of your Inner Dream,
of those very things that you set out to achieve. Today will find you getting

predators. The calm little Numbat gathers leaves to make himself a bed in the
nearest hollow log when it is time to rest. If Numbat has leaped around you, you

Apprearing in the many versions of Priestess of Swords card in the tarot, the
owl links the Priestess of Swords to Athena. The owl is said by some to be
associated with occultists and students of the unknown, and with those who are
living enigmas – paradoxes loving both logic and the illogical. In Germany and
other parts of Europe, the call of an owl is a portent of coming death. An owl
is pictured on card XIII of the Old Path Tarot flying before the shape of death,
associating it with death and transformation. This death-call legend may link it
to the myth of the banshee, and Lilith is associated with the death children is
some legends. The owl as a spirit helper ecourages exploration of the unkown,
and the spending of time in illuminating meditation. In China the owl is a
harbinger of misfortune, but it is the sacred animal of the rain-god it
symbolizes a demonic night creature and considered an evil omen. Owls come in
all sizes, from a tiny miniature that actually lives inside the cactus in the

silently flown into your life, remember that great wisdom comes from silence, “Spirit”

Aesop saw it as the rival of the weasel. Early Christianity related the parrot
to St. Basil’s dictum that good Christians imitate the Apostles and the just.
The beak of the bird was an amulet against fever and demons. Conrad of Wurzburg
saw the bird (since he believed its feathers did not get wet in the rain) as an
emblem of the Virgin Mary. In China the bird was a symbol for the engagingly
prattling prostitute, but with a pearl in its mouth a symbol for Kwan-Yin, while

loves to play hide and seek, diving and swimming long distances and then
splashing out of the water saying “Here I am, come play with me”. If Penguin
has dived into your life “Spirit” is reminding you to play. It is important
to remember that you are here to work at living not as some do, live to work. So

and bring the very thing we fear. Rabbit people are so afraid of tragedy,
illness, and disaster, that they call those very fears to them to teach them
lessons. If you see Rabbit or in any way feel attracted to him, it may be
telling you to wait for the forces of the universe to start moving again, to

frequently represents Satan, the tempter and captor of souls. The rat is the

God’s love and the ability of God to meet all of man’s emergencies. See Kings
17:4 where Elijah was fed by the ravens. To an Englishman, the raven can stand
for self-survival or the British Empire and the continuity of the United
Kingdom. However in Edgar Allen Poe’s novel, the raven stood for fatalism and
despair. The raven represents those who are so caught up in worldly pleasures
that they keep putting off their conversion. It is a harbinger of misfortune,
disease, war, and death. Raven advises you to allow the magick and mystery of
life to flow through you. Be drawn to explore the mystical side of your being.
Your answers are before you – remember to look under your nose. By being able to
travel from this world to the next, the raven symbolizes also the power of
healing – but the type of healing that comes about through a radical
confrontation with the unconscious, with the hidden, with the Shadow, and with
the darker, potentially destructive aspects of the psyche. The raven’s
association with death becomes an association with depth and thus with depth
psychology and the transformative powers of initiation – for such a moment marks
to a greater or lesser extent the death of the old self, and the rebirth of a
new self. The raven’s connection with healing is reinforced when we consider it
as a bird of prophecy and divination, integral facets of the healer’s arts. The
raven could travel to the darkest regions of the Underworld to bring back
visions and oracular instructions for the seeker and healer. The raven has been
seen as an oracle for thousands of years. The early Irish Druids divined
according to their flight and cries, and as late as 1694 it was reported that a
Hertfordshire raven uttered a prophecy three times.

Throughout time, Raven has carried the medicine of magic. This has been true in
many cultures across the planet. It is sacred, in the Native American medicine
ways, to honour Raven as the bringer of magic. If the magic is bad medicine, the
carrier may be honoured out of fear rather than out of respect. Those who fear
Raven may do so because they have been dabbling in areas in which they had no
knowledge, and a spell may have backfired on them. Raven magic is a powerful
medicine that can give you the courage to enter the darkness of the void, which
is the home of all that is not yet in form. The void is called the Great
Mystery. Great Mystery existed before all other things came into being. Great
Spirit lives inside the void and emerged from the Great Mystery. Raven is the
messenger of the void. In Native teachings the colour black means many things,
but it does not mean evil. Black can mean the seeking of answers, the void, or
the road of the spiritual or non-physical. The blue-black Raven contains an
iridescence that speaks of the magic of darkness and a changeability of form and
shape that brings an awakening in the process. Raven is the guardian of
ceremonial magic and in absentia healing. In any healing circle, Raven is
present. Raven guides the magic of healing and the change in consciousness that
will bring about a new reality and dispel “dis-ease” or illness. Raven bring in
new state of wellness from the Void of Great Mystery and the field of plenty.
Raven is the messenger that carries all energy flows of ceremonial magic between
the ceremony itself and the intended destination. For instance, if a ceremony is
being performed to send energy to a disaster area where people need courage and
strength, Raven would be the courier for that energy flow. The intention could
be to allow the people of the devastated area to feel the concern and support of
the participants in the ceremony. The Norse god Odin has two ravens, Hugin and
Munin (“Thought and Memory”) which fly out over the world every day and report
to him the news every evening: “I fear for Thought, that he come not back, But I
fear yet more for Memory.” They are the sides of the mind of the magician as it
is propelled into “astral” experience.

ourselves. A non-poisonous snake denotes cleverness, proceeding with
discernment. A poisonous snake can relate to a person who will attack or

‘snake in the grass’, being bitten by a snake can represent dangerous emotions

is one of Australia”s most deadly and aggressive snakes. He has a heightened
sense of smell and sight. Taipan is active almost all day and part of the night.
Snake medicine is powerful medicine because Transmutation is essential to all
life. The Snake sheds his old skin in the transmutation process bringing forth
his new self. Allowing all that is past to be released as he has out grown it,
released it and now welcomes all that is positive and new to be engaged. Snake
relies on his internal life-force to determine when the time it right to call on
his transmutation powers. Snake medicine is the life-force within, the rising
serpent to our own awakening. If snake has slithered past you, you are being
asked by “Spirit” to shed your old ways and transmute into the new you. The

that so long as she remains active in her life”s purpose she will always be
nourished by the Universe. Her knowledge of the Interconnectedness of all energy
is reflected by her ability to catch what she needs but not to waste. If Spider
has weaved her way into your life “Spirit” is reminding you that all things
are interconnected. All things are woven together in this web of life. You need
to put things together to see the whole picture. Hear, feel and see your
answers. Don”t allow yourself to be trapped by another”s web of deception.
If you are about to sign documents or enter into agreements make sure you
clearly understand what you are about to commit to and how it will effect you.
Don”t rush in without looking, don”t get caught up in someone else”s
tangled web. Deities and legendary characters represented as spiders include
Ts’its’tsi’nako the Old Spider Woman and Anansi the trickster of Africa. Anansi
once tried to steal all of the Wisdom plants, the source of all wisdom. He took
all the plants, put them in his calabash, tied it around his neck and started
climbing up the Tree of Life, where he lived. The calabash got in his way and he
could not climb up the tree. A young girl saw his dilemma and tied the calabash
to his back for him. He then raced to the top of the tree. Soon he realized that
even with all the wisdom he stole, the girl had been wiser that he, so he
decided that he couldn’t use the wisdom, so he threw the wisdom plants off the
tree. Then the wind caught them and spread the wisdom all over the world for
everyone to enjoy. In India the spider is the weaver of the web of Maya,
illusion. As the destroyer of insect life, it is a guardian against invasion of
the lower forces. It is the maternal, feminine force par excellence, inasmuch as
the female destroys the male upon completion of mating. In her web she stands as
the centre of the world. In her spinning of the web and devouring her prey she
parallels the waxing and waning of the Moon, involution and evolution, the
alternation of birth and death. The spider, as the Moon, then weaves the destiny
of everything in the world. The spider has also recently become something of a
representative totem for the World Wide Web.

TASMANIAN TIGER (Thylacine)-
Harbinger of change, the “Silent One”, the carrier of deep messages we need
to hear. The medicine of Tasmanian Tiger is Illusion and Elusiveness. Tassie
Tiger once roamed the mainland of Australia, later being restricted to Tasmania,
and is now believed to be extinct. Tasmanian Tiger was so called because of the
distinctive white “Tiger” stripes adorning his chest and rump. The Tiger was
more like a wolf in build though, and had a tail that resembles a Kangaroo”s.
Tassie Tiger slept in caves and hollows during the day and hunted on dusk, thus
making him elusive and more difficult to see. Though the Tiger is listed as
extinct, there have long been reported cases of Tasmanian Tigers being seen on
occasion, though the sightings were often thought of as practical jokes. Some
people claim to have seen the illusive animal while it was hunting at dusk for
food. Those that have had the great fortune to see the animal know how fortunate
they have been, and know it”s no joke. If Tasmanian Tiger has materialized
into your life you are being advised by “Spirit” to act with caution, become
a little illusive and don”t put yourself out there for everyone else too
freely. Allow yourself to slip into the background and become invisible for a
while. In other words, step back from the goings on around you and observe from
the outside, looking in. This is a self protective move and may be necessary so

turtle is said to personify the female creative energy of an all-embracing earth
mother, who holds the cycle of life and death in her hands. The negative aspect
is a fear of facing responsibility or reality. Can represent long life because
turtles live a long time. Quiet strength. In China it carries the world on its
back. It is a symbol of fertility and unwavering vitality, and great patience.
Many Natives refer to North America as Turtle Island, because their legends say
that when the earth was covered with water, Turtle dove to the bottom of the
oceans bringing up earth on its back so that the people could have a safe and
dry home. Turtle is at home anywhere because it carries its home on its back. It
does not become attached to places, for it is free to search for new
opportunities wherever they may be found. When they sense danger, or are in
uncomfortable and insecure settings, they withdraw into their shell, and are
protected. If you have Turtle medicine, you value both the power of the earth,
the waters of the earth, and the magic of the heavens, for Turtle symbolizes
both the grounding quality of earth energy, and the magic of the mystical. Using
Turtle energy can help you achieve real balance in your life and your spirit so
that you don’t get “stuck in the mud”. Turtle’s medicine includes a connection
with the centre, navigation skills, patience, self-boundaries, associated with
the feminine, power to heal female diseases, respecting the boundaries of
others, developing new ideas, psychically protecting oneself, self-reliance,
tenacity, non-violent defence. The medicine of Turtle is Mother Earth and
Healing Knowledge. The large Green Turtle is the symbol of Earth Mother, because
she carries her home on her back. We should be reminded to be more connected
with the Mother Earth because the Earth is our home and Mother. This gentle
creature is recognized for its acknowledgment of the delicate balance between
ocean and earth, and reminds us of the importance of respecting both. Without
the health of the ocean and earth Turtle would cease to exist, as would
humanity. The medicine of Turtle is also a reminder for ourselves to be very
grounded. The Earth is where we come from and to where we shall return. If
Turtle has swum your way, you are being asked by “Spirit” to go outside, get
amongst nature, feel your connection to your Earth Mother and embrace the
oneness of it all. You are being encouraged to ground yourself fully and show
respect for the Mother. She gives us all our healing knowledge and asks only
that we heal ourselves, for as we are healed so she shall be healed. For as the

within. So be it and it is so.

Mut was an Egyptian Goddess who took the form of a vulture. Her name means “mother.” She was generally depicted as a woman wearing a long, brightly coloured dress (often in a feather pattern) and a vulture headdress. The headdress was surmounted by the white or the double crown of Egypt. She essentially played the role of divine mother to the reigning king and as such many amulets representing Mut depict her as a seated woman suckling a child (a motive common for Isis and Hathor). Royal women who held the title of “God’s Wife of Amun” were all shown with iconographic features which linked them to Mut. Mut also has a more aggressive nature, that of Sekhmet the feline goddess.

forces of Satan. In China it stands for greed and cruelty. It represents the
diabolical enemy that threatens the flock of the faithful. It pretends to be
lame before it attacks. They pretend to be utterly innocent and harmless but
their hearts are full of deceit. A human ‘wolf’ relentlessly pursues large
numbers of women for sexual gratification. It symbolizes cunning, treachery and
gratification. In a dream it symbolizes prowling the landscape of the psyche,
representing untamed external energies. It can, however, be trained to co-exist
with humans. It represents alert caution. On the positive side, Wolves have been
long regarded by Native Americans as teachers or pathfinders. Wolves are
fiercely loyal to their mates, and have a strong sense of family while
maintaining individualism. In the stars, Wolf is represented by the Dog, Sirius,
thought by many aboriginal tribes to be the home of the Ancients. Wolves are
probably the most misunderstood of wild animals. Tales of cold-bloodedness
abound, in spite of their friendly, social and intelligent traits. They are
truly free spirits, even though their packs are highly organized. They seem to
go out of their way to avoid a fight. One is rarely necessary when a shift in
posture, a growl, or a glance gets the point across quite readily.
Traditionally, someone with Wolf Medicine has a strong sense of self, and
communicates well through subtle changes in voice inflection and body movements.
They often find new solutions to problems while providing stability and support

betrayer in Ireland, it was said that the wren flapped it’s wings above the
place where St Stephen was hiding and this led to his martyrdom, and also
betrayed armies to the enemy, and this was why the wren was hunted. It has also
been written that the hunt symbolised the destruction of pagan beliefs by
