LADYBUG – denotes an irritating situation in one’s life.
LAMB – usually denotes a reference to Jesus Christ or God, sacrificed by the Israelites to escape the tenth plague that God meted out to Egypt for refusing to let Moses and his people go. (Exodus 11-12) Christ, seeks lambs who have gone astray. John 1:29 quotes John the Baptist calling Christ…the lamb of God. Rev: 14:1 refers to the triumphant lamb. The Easter Lamb is the flag of victory over death.
LEECH – denotes a freeloader, one who lacks self-respect and responsibility.
LEMMING – denotes a person who always follows and does not follow one’s own path, a lack of individuality.
LEOPARD – Swiftness, cunning, strength, perseverance, boldness, beauty. Gaining confidence for astral travel and Otherworld journeys. It is said that in terms of pure malice and savagery, the leopard outdoes all it’s feline relatives. It is extremely fierce, treacherous and although it is wary, has little fear of humans. Intelligent, and quick to learn anything that is to its advantage, it can climb trees and leap ten feet or more. Leopards are most active in darkness. Species of leopards can be found from the Black Sea in Europe east to Burma and the Malay Peninsula, including all of India and Sri Lanka and as far north as Siberia. In Egypt, Osiris and his priests were sometimes pictured wearing leopard skins. In Africa, it was a sacred animal to the Ibo and at times was considered to in inhabited by the souls of the dead. To the Chinese it represented bravery and intense ferocity. The Arabs called it Nimi, which means courage, boldness and grace, while in Greece, the leopard was the traditional mount of the god Dionysus, who’s priests often wore leopard skins. In the Greek language, the panther’s name meant ‘all beast’. The word panther and all-beast connected it to the god Pan. They also equated this animal with Argos of the Thousand Eyes.
LEOPARD, SNOW LEOPARD – Sensitivity to Touch, Stalking, Approaching Someone Unseen, Movement in Shadow Worlds, Communication with Plant Kingdom, Understanding One’s Shadow Side, Trusting One’s Inner Self, Agility, Strength. Denotes a tendency of resistance.
LICE – denotes lack of cleanliness of the person, or emotional or mental or spiritual negativity.
LION – Royalty, sun-symbol, courageous guardian, protector, pride, leadership, wisdom, power, family, the power of feminine energy. Letting Go of Stress, Strong Family Ties, Strength, Courage, Energy, Ferocity, Assertion of the Feminine and the Power of the Feminine Sun. Denotes a strength of character, military valour, tremendous energy, effortlessly masterful, and dominion, may indicate the “Lion” of God,. It can represent the victory of human intellect over its animal nature. It can also be negative and denote a braggart, a roaring lion can denote anger and temper – However, the golden colour can represent the good side of the individual. Being eaten by a lion represents being eaten alive by one’s own bad temper. In Astrology it symbolizes Leo, (July 23 – Aug 23), the fifth sign of the Zodiac; its planet is the Sun. People born under Leo are thus solar in nature. People born under Leo are said to be natural leaders, intelligent, magnanimous. A lion can be one extreme or the other, either a symbol of the devil whom Christ overcomes, or a model for a hero. The Lion can also represent the power of feminine energy. The female hunts and kills prey, feeds the group and takes care of the young. She is the nurturing force in all senses. The male roars to frighten prey and force them toward the lioness, who waits patiently for the right moment to attack. Although the male is the group’s protector, he doesn’t look for confrontation nor attacks needlessly. He only acts when challenged and will fight to death in order to protect, but in reality he prefers the easy, peaceful life. Lion’s Medicine teaches us the magic of group interaction, of group energy. It also teaches us the secrets of silence and patience. Patience is to pay attention to detail. Lion suggests that we
examine ourselves closely in order to understand our strengths and weaknesses, and to wait for the proper moment to act and take full advantage of a given situation. Learn from Lion the proper way to use power and strength. Stay calm and still, sure of your power. But if necessary, don’t hesitate to fight for the things you are interested in.
LIZARD – Dreamtime, dreaming, Letting Go, Past Issues, Awareness, Inner Dreams
and Re-growth. Detachment from Ego, Power to Regenerate That Which is Lost,
Facing Fear, Brings forth subconscious hopes and fears, self-protection, vision,
Controlling Dreams, Dream recall, hidden defences, knowing when to back off,
Moving in the Otherworld, Conservation, Agility. The negative side can denote a
lack of scruples. Through our dreams Lizard teaches us the importance of
respecting and remembering the messages of Spirit. For many Native American
tribes the lizard is the gatekeeper to the dream world. In the south Pacific,
lizards are considered to be messengers of the gods or even deities themselves.
Like the snake, the lizard sheds its skin, and thus has come to represent
regeneration. Also symbolizes death followed by resurrection. It also symbolizes
safety and welfare because it can lose its tail and regenerate it. Oh what
wonderful dreams we weave of times forgotten and times remembered. Lizard
remembers the Dreamtime, has not forgotten the times he ruled the Earth. One
thing Lizard has not forgotten but alas man has, is, how to let go. Lizard when
under threat will let go of his tail as a defence mechanism thereby ensuring his
survival, but man will not let go of past issues and this will always be his
undoing, by bringing about dis-ease. If man would only remember to trust his
inner Dream and learn to let go, his enlightenment would be ensured. If Lizard
has dashed past you, you are being reminded by “Spirit’ of your Inner Dream,
of those very things that you set out to achieve. Today will find you getting
closer to those Dreams but be aware of letting go of the past. Make sure you
call on the ability to let go of those things that no longer serve your higher
purpose, so you can call on your own re-growth.
LLAMA – comforting others.
LOCUST – seen as a feared plague, the embodiment of divine retribution. The
locust is Christ’s comrade in the battle against the heathen. It symbolizes
Christ resurrected. Swarms of them are taken as an indication that the order of
the cosmos had been disturbed.
LOON – Serenity, good orator, judgmental, can come across as uncaring or
unsympathetic, denotes mental or emotional confusion, Realizing dreams, haunting
and eerie song, imagination.
LOUSE – can denote a personality trait, or a negative situation or person
LYNX – Guardian, guide, listener, manifestation of spiritual force and
controlled power, acuity of vision, rapid cleverness, mental alertness. Keenness
of Sight, Divination, Developing Psychic Senses, Keeper of all Secrets and
Mysteries, Movement Through Time and Space, Secrets and Vision of the Hidden and
Unseen, guardian and guide, winter season.
LYREBIRD – Genetic memory. The Lyrebird’s ability to pass on taught sounds its
ancestors once heard could be likened to the theory of genetic memory – memories
often confused with the concept of past lives. Lyrebird also asks you to let go
of your shyness and openly express yourself. Step away from the shadow of
self-doubt. There is no need for you to imitate another’s point of view, you
have your own. Learn to trust your own voice and speak your truth. Talk your
talk with confidence and courage.

MAGGOT – denotes a
self-serving personality who gains from the efforts of others
MAGPIE – Occult knowledge, doorway to new realms, wily and wilful – denotes
talkativeness, ‘chatterbox’. In China the magpie is considered ‘good luck.’ Its
cry is believed to announce ‘good news’. It is the embodiment of ‘yang’, the
bird of happiness and good fortune, marital bliss. Magpie asks you to call on
your swiftness of decision making. You have the ability to be a person who gets
the job done quickly. Be acutely aware of the goings-on around you. Be watchful
and careful. Be protective of self and your possessions.
MANATEE – (related to the dugong) Gentleness, loving, childlike
MARTIN – Good luck and community peace, integration
MEADOWLARK – Cheerfulness, sublimation, inner journey, linked to moon
MOCKINGBIRD – denotes a lack of individualized expression associated with
mockery, such a person committing adultery make a mockery of their marriage
vows. Seeing a mockingbird may denote a rebuke in the form of this bird. Can
also mean finding your sacred song and recognition of your innate abilities.
MOLE – indicates a lack of communication; fearing reality. I lives in the dark
and is afraid of light. It represents avarice because it lives on it’s own body
fat.
MONKEY -Ability to change the environment, health, success. Immaturity or
lack of individuality. Asian sculptures of three monkeys show them with their
hands over their mouth, eyes, and ears which is a sign of ‘evil’. In Japan,
these same three monkeys are denoted by the word “saru”, which means both
‘monkey’ and ‘not do’ thus symbolizing conscious abstinence from evil.
MOOSE – Headstrong, Unstoppable, Longevity, steadfastness, Primal feminine
energies and the magic of life and death, self esteem, wisdom.
MOSQUITO – denotes temporary irritations in one’s daily life
MOTH – Transformation, movement into shadows, finding the light

MOUSE – Shyness, Quiet, Attention to Detail, Sneakiness, order, organizer,
attain big things by working on little; innocence, faith, trust, scrutiny, Eye
for detail, noticing the little things. Can denote a negative aspect in one’s
life. Mice can represent the little irritations in life. Seeing dead mice but
not cleaning them up can denote refusal to let negative emotions go. They are
said to have demonic and prophetic powers. Their squeaking and footsteps are
taken as portents of storms. In dreams a mouse could embody the soul of the
dreamer and as such leave the body and then return to it. The worst thing they
do is spread pestilence. They are associated symbolically with satanic demons
and with all powers hostile to humanity. In dreams, the mouse sometimes
represents the female sex organ to young men. In the positive aspect, the mouse
is seen as though of as analogous to the soul.
MUD TURTLE – denotes a negative personality trait of near-constant confusion and
withdrawal from situations
MULE – denotes a stubborn personality, but independent, a reluctance to be
persuaded to another’s ideas

NIGHTINGALE –
Soft-tempered, easy demeanor, soothing speaker, graceful movements, keeper of
the night, a plaintive mother, symbolizes the human goal of producing truly
melodious language. The name of the bird stands for poetry or song. The parents
patiently teach their young to sing. It is a good omen. Some, however, interpret
it’s cry as a cry for help from a ‘poor soul in purgatory’ or a plaintive
warning of an impending death. It also symbolizes acts of charity being
rewarded.
NUMBAT – The medicine of Numbat is Preparedness and Gathering. Numbat is always
prepared to stick his long tongue into termite wood in search of his food. He is
prepared to forage for food at any time of the day, not being overly concerned
about the possibility of the open forest floor leaving him easy prey to
predators. The calm little Numbat gathers leaves to make himself a bed in the
nearest hollow log when it is time to rest. If Numbat has leaped around you, you
are obviously prepared to talk your talk and walk your walk. You are not afraid
to say “Hey, this is who I am, this is what I believe. This is what makes me
happy”. Just a word of caution though, in your relentless gathering of truth,
be open to the answers you may receive and be prepared for the work you will be
called on to do, in order to nourish yourself fully.
NUTHATCH – Applying wisdom to natural world, groundedness, ethereal

Protection through distraction, intelligence, getting past negative barriers,
multifaceted, skilled in many areas. Symbolizes the spirits of the Underworld
and mysterious otherworldly forces.

a symbol of religious hypocrisy; those who give the appearance of holiness, but

suspicion, feminine power and nurturing, Silent wisdom and nocturnal vision,

OWL – Vision, Silence, Intuition, Divination, Third Eye and Psychic Gifts.

habits, solitude, silent flight, a plaintive ‘harbinger of death’ cry, and
symbolize a turning away from spiritual light. Athena, Lilith, and Blodeuwedd
are all associated with owls, Blodeuwed being transformed into an owl, Lilith
having the claws of an owl, and Athena having an owl as her companion.
Apprearing in the many versions of Priestess of Swords card in the tarot, the
owl links the Priestess of Swords to Athena. The owl is said by some to be
associated with occultists and students of the unknown, and with those who are
living enigmas – paradoxes loving both logic and the illogical. In Germany and
other parts of Europe, the call of an owl is a portent of coming death. An owl
is pictured on card XIII of the Old Path Tarot flying before the shape of death,
associating it with death and transformation. This death-call legend may link it
to the myth of the banshee, and Lilith is associated with the death children is
some legends. The owl as a spirit helper ecourages exploration of the unkown,
and the spending of time in illuminating meditation. In China the owl is a
harbinger of misfortune, but it is the sacred animal of the rain-god it
symbolizes a demonic night creature and considered an evil omen. Owls come in
all sizes, from a tiny miniature that actually lives inside the cactus in the
desert, to the great horned owl, which is the only bird that can out fly the
golden eagle. A fully grown great horned is an awe inspiring creature. Its
talons are furry, and closely resemble the paws of a baby mountain lion with
claws extended. It is a meat eater, which means it can be a fierce warrior if
challenged, or if something dear to it is threatened. It is often referred to as
Night Eagle. Owl is at home in the night. It has great awareness of all that is
around it at all times. It has predator vision, which means it sees clearly what
it looks at. It has great intuition: it is the totem of psychics and
clairvoyants. It has the courage to follow its instincts. Owl’s medicine
includes seeing behind masks, silent and swift movement, keen sight, messenger
of secrets and omens, shape-shifting, link between the dark, unseen world and
the world of light, comfort with shadow self, moon power, freedom. The medicine
of Owl is Vision, Silence and Intuition. Owl glides through the night silently
observing all that occurs. “Night Eagle” as Owl is called has great vision
as he is able to discern the precise moment to launch into action and achieve
success. Through silence Owl is able to strike on the most unsuspecting prey.
You will notice that should a threat become apparent in the territory of Owl, he
will call out to let all who dwell nearby, share in his vision. If Owl has
silently flown into your life, remember that great wisdom comes from silence, “Spirit”
echoes through the silence to send us his messages. It is important to allow the
space for the silence, so you can hear “Spirits” words. Great visions abound
today for you, follow those visions and be guided. You will feel the energy
shifts within today. You need to cultivate your psychic powers and follow your
intuition.
OXEN – Sacrifice, self-denial, chastity. Denotes overwork, pulling harder than
necessary. An image of patient servitude and peaceful strength.
OYSTER – denotes inner fears or anything new, withdrawing from interaction with

cunning animal. has superior fighting courage of the female. In the positive, it
has a beautiful voice, it symbolizes Christ. The Panther is said to keep the
diabolical dragon away. A black panther is considered especially dangerous.
PARAKEET – a lack of analytical spiritual thinking, denoting the ‘love’ bird
could mean a relationship that is caged in and needs to be freed.
PARROT – Communication, beauty, guide for wisdom, mockery, thinking before
speaking. Denotes the inability to think for oneself, repeats only what others
say. Sunshine and colour healing associated with salt. Parrot encourages you to
keep seeking for that which nourishes you, for the nourishment actually comes
from the seeking, not from the seed sought. You are a beautiful, wonderful
being. Callimachus (300-240 BCE) saw the bird as a symbol of babbling humans.
Aesop saw it as the rival of the weasel. Early Christianity related the parrot
to St. Basil’s dictum that good Christians imitate the Apostles and the just.
The beak of the bird was an amulet against fever and demons. Conrad of Wurzburg
saw the bird (since he believed its feathers did not get wet in the rain) as an
emblem of the Virgin Mary. In China the bird was a symbol for the engagingly
prattling prostitute, but with a pearl in its mouth a symbol for Kwan-Yin, while
in Persia the bird may possibly have been known as a messenger symbol, like the
crow, according to Cirlot, and may be related to the Egyptian ba (a pictograph
for the soul of a winged creature with a human head).
PEACOCK – denotes arrogance of behaviour. Stands for self-love, Wisdom and
vision, ostentatious, protective and powerful, immortality, dignity, and
self-confidence. It is a positive symbol of the Sun. In the Mid-east, the Kurds
view the bird as a messenger of the God. For Muslims, it symbolizes the cosmos
or the sun and the moon. He symbolizes renewal and resurrection. It represents
spiritual rebirth. The negative symbols are that is struts about, prides himself
on his appearance and gazes haughtily about. See Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goeth
before destruction.”
PEGASUS – (The flying Horse) symbolically is represents vitality and the
strength of the horse, and with weightlessness as it flies like a bird. It
symbolizes the indomitable poetic spirit overcoming the impediments of the
world.
PELICAN – Self-sacrificing, non-competitive, buoyant, rising above trials. The
pelican is the alchemical symbol for the stage known as mortificatio, the
breaking open of the outer shell to reveal the inner man. As the mother pelican
was believed to feed her young from blood pecked from her own breast, she is
also sometimes used as a general symbol of self-sacrifice. Pelican also
symbolizes the sacrificial death of Christ, selfless striving for purification.
It is associated with the Rosicrucian degree of the Scottish system of
Free-masonry.
PENGUIN – Lucid dreaming and astral projection, feminine, birth giving energy,
Father-nurturing, patience, astral projection, sexes working together, family
orientation.
PENGUIN (FAIRY PENGUIN) – Agility, play, dreams, innocence, balance & inner
child. The medicine of Penguin is Agility and Play. Penguin finds great joy in
life. He characteristically follows the well worn paths of his ancestors. Using
their wisdom to make his own toil easier so that there is more time for play. He
loves to bob, dive and splash about in his waters, excited that he is alive. He
loves to play hide and seek, diving and swimming long distances and then
splashing out of the water saying “Here I am, come play with me”. If Penguin
has dived into your life “Spirit” is reminding you to play. It is important
to remember that you are here to work at living not as some do, live to work. So
allow the play that comes your way today and embrace life. Life is for living &
giving. Go out and enjoy the day. Do that very thing you have been talking about
doing. Let your inner child play!
PHEASANT – denotes
a spiritual seeker, family fertility and sexuality. On the negative side, it
symbolizes flooding, immorality, or seduction, and supernatural calamity.
PHOENIX – Overcoming Impossible Odds, Reincarnation, New Life/Cycles, Cleansing
Energy of Fire, Rebirth, Renewal, Growth Spiritually, Strength, Energy. Denotes
the utmost examples of spirituality, a personality who bounces back from
adversity, refuses to be defeated. In Mythology, the bird had a life of 500
years. Because it is consumed in fire only to rise from the ashes, it represents
resurrection and immortality. It can mean the harbinger of spiritual rebirth. In
the American Indian tradition, the Phoenix is starting to rise now for the
destruction/recreation process of the earth.
PIG – denotes one who takes more than one needs. Primarily a symbol of
uncleanliness. But it represents fertility and prosperity in cultures of
antiquity. In China, the pig is the 12th and last sign of the Zodiac,
symbolizing manly strength. Pigs are considered unclean by the Egyptians, but
not as strenuously as the Jews and Muslims. The pig is a symbol of ignorance and
voracious appetite, as well as an emblem used in mockery of Judaism. The pig is
usually the ‘booby’ prize for coming in last in contests. Dreaming of a pig
usually denotes good fortune coming one’s way.

PLATYPUS – Women”s Wisdom. Platypus represents the true essence of Women’s
Sacred Wisdom – to trust blindingly in one’s inner direction and to move as one
with the creative ebbs and flows of Mother Earth. Platypus reminds you to keep
your own counsel, and don’t feel forced to share yourself around. Today is not
the day to be a team player. Allow some time for self. Submerge yourself within

autumn season – denotes a tendency to unconsciously defend oneself in obtaining

discover the trees, the birds, the flowers. Take time to allow the newness of
discovery engulf you. Life is a discovery of self. Every new moment brings

PRAIRIE DOG – Community, networking, dig deeply, Swiftness, industrious,
constructive, preparedness.
PRAYING MANTIS – Power of stillness, sleep and dreaming, prophet. Can also
denote one who is a spiritual hypocrite.
PUMA – Companion on journeys to other worlds, grace, silent power
PYTHON – denotes a suffocating personality or situation

QUAIL – Group
nourishment and protection, teaches mindfulness. Group-work, team play, creator
of harmony and group tolerance, protectiveness (especially toward children)
QUOLL – Quoll asks you to use your intelligence in your endeavours today. Think
clearly about what you are doing, and be fearless when it comes to decision
making and taking action. Reach deep within, let go of your fears, and develop
your own sense of fearlessness. Release your fears by facing up to them now.

RABBIT, HARE –
Guile, Quick-Thinking, Humility, Strengthening Intuition, Releasing Fear,
Overcoming the Past, Resolution to Change, Fertility, New Life, Alertness,
Nurturing, Rebirth, Faith, Balance, fear, timidity, nervousness, recognize the
signs around you, hidden skills, borrower. Denotes physical or sexual obsessive
preoccupation which leaves no room for spiritual development. A rabbit also
denotes quiet endurance of one’s pain. A white rabbit can symbolize the
awakening of spirit or a symbol for Easter and resurrection. A prolific rabbit
can symbolize the power of the sexual feelings. Rabbit’s medicine includes
moving through fear, living by one’s own wits, receiving hidden teachings and
intuitive messages, quick thinking, strengthening intuition, and paradox. Rabbit
also represents humility, because he is quiet and soft and not self-asserting.
Rabbit reminds us not to be afraid. Fearful thoughts reproduce (like rabbits)
and bring the very thing we fear. Rabbit people are so afraid of tragedy,
illness, and disaster, that they call those very fears to them to teach them

confrontation with the unconscious, with the hidden, with the Shadow, and with

according to their flight and cries, and as late as 1694 it was reported that a
Hertfordshire raven uttered a prophecy three times.
Throughout time, Raven has carried the medicine of magic. This has been true in
many cultures across the planet. It is sacred, in the Native American medicine
ways, to honour Raven as the bringer of magic. If the magic is bad medicine, the
carrier may be honoured out of fear rather than out of respect. Those who fear
Raven may do so because they have been dabbling in areas in which they had no

life with and through daily life, this is a positive symbol.

Intensity, trustin but not trustworthy. Denotes one is going against the flow of

the depths of the Sea from which all life springs. It is said to acquire its
great knowledge from eating the Nine Hazels of Wisdom that fall from the Tree of

SCARAB BEETLE – denotes one’s soul, the inner self and of renewal and

who will retaliate if crossed. In negative situations, one can also sting

climbing up the Tree of Life, where he lived. The calabash got in his way and he
could not climb up the tree. A young girl saw his dilemma and tied the calabash
to his back for him. He then raced to the top of the tree. Soon he realized that
even with all the wisdom he stole, the girl had been wiser that he, so he
decided that he couldn’t use the wisdom, so he threw the wisdom plants off the

Tiger once roamed the mainland of Australia, later being restricted to Tasmania,
and is now believed to be extinct. Tasmanian Tiger was so called because of the
distinctive white “Tiger” stripes adorning his chest and rump. The Tiger was
more like a wolf in build though, and had a tail that resembles a Kangaroo”s.
Tassie Tiger slept in caves and hollows during the day and hunted on dusk, thus
making him elusive and more difficult to see. Though the Tiger is listed as
extinct, there have long been reported cases of Tasmanian Tigers being seen on
occasion, though the sightings were often thought of as practical jokes. Some
people claim to have seen the illusive animal while it was hunting at dusk for
food. Those that have had the great fortune to see the animal know how fortunate

UNICORN – Spirit of Purity, Innocence, Childhood. Denotes real possibilities, the reaches of reality. Healing powers, intellect and sexuality. Making dreams come true, virtue, beauty, weather patterns, connection with the woodland and the beings within. In China it stands for happiness and blessedness.

VULTURE – denotes greedy and aggressive individuals, usually with overeating. They are considered prophetic because they followed marching armies and appeared always three days before a great battle. It symbolizes the Virgin Mary because it does not sit on its own eggs. Can also denote purification, never-ending vigilance, guardian of mysteries – The ancient Egyptians thought that all vultures were female and hence they represented the notion of supreme motherhood. Mut was an Egyptian Goddess who took the form of a vulture. Her name means “mother.” She was generally depicted as a woman wearing a long, brightly coloured dress (often in a feather pattern) and a vulture headdress. The headdress was surmounted by the white or the double crown of Egypt. She essentially played the role of divine mother to the reigning king and as such many amulets representing Mut depict her as a seated woman suckling a child (a motive common for Isis and Hathor). Royal women who held the title of “God’s Wife of Amun” were all shown with iconographic features which linked them to Mut. Mut also has a more aggressive nature, that of Sekhmet the feline goddess.

place where St Stephen was hiding and this led to his martyrdom, and also
betrayed armies to the enemy, and this was why the wren was hunted. It has also
been written that the hunt symbolised the destruction of pagan beliefs by
Christianity. In Ireland at least, this could be the origins of the hunt, as so
much of pagan lore, festivals and so forth have been used against us, to uphold
the idea that Christianity is the only true path.
